Yuma Receives Grant Money To Hire Police Officers

Yuma is one of several Arizona cities to receive grant money for the addition of police officers. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Phoenix plans to hire 15 new police officers. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton announced Thursday that his city will dispatch some of the new officers to Phoenix schools as part of the School Resource Officer Program. The hires were made possible by $5.3 million grants from the Justice Department's Community Oriented Policing Services to seven Arizona cities. Also getting grants were the cities of Maricopa, Clarkdale, Glendale and Peoria along with the Tohono O'Odham Nation Police Department. The cities will use the money to create 43 new positions, including the 15 in Phoenix.
