Sequestration Cuts Could Suppress AZ Economic Recovery

Budget-CutsGovernment officials and business leaders say federal budget cuts that could begin today would dampen Arizona's economic recovery.  Under the so-called sequestration, there could be furloughs or layoffs for Arizona's many defense workers.

College students could see fewer federal dollars.

Patients might have less access to health care.

At Grand Canyon National Park, officials say visitors could expect closed trails and longer lines.

The White House estimates Arizona faces $17.7 million in lost funding for K-through-12 schools and about $1.9 million in grants to help treat substance abuse.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection could see reduced staffing levels.  Funding and staffing reductions would weaken security between ports of entry.
