National Public Lands Day

National Public Lands Day is Saturday, the single largest hands-on volunteer effort on behalf of public lands. Last year, an estimated 175,000 volunteers helped at over 2200 locations nationwide. In Arizona, volunteers are building and maintaining trails and camping areas, and improving wildlife habitat. The Safford office of the Bureau of Land Management is using volunteers to clean up an unauthorized shooting ranges. Ranger James Ford says shooters have dumped trash to use for target practice.

Ford says there are similar areas needing clean-ups as well, but his office has only three rangers to cover 1.4 million acres, so volunteers are critical.
