The Island Lake Fire, which has burned for the past several days, has forced the closure of several recreation areas around the Colorado River in both California and Arizona – just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
So far, officials say the fire has burned 3,200 acres and has destroyed five structures and a fence. Fire information officer Lori Cook explained that the Picacho State Recreation Area will be closed.
The Department of Land Management’s restrictions went into effect on Wednesday in order to help prevent fires.
The main channel of the Colorado River will remain open.
