Four Indicted on Tax Fraud Scheme

Tax-RefundA federal grand jury has indicted four people, including a prison inmate and two ex-convicts, in a tax fraud scheme. Phoenix television station KPNX says that false tax returns were filed in the names of 22 prisoners.  Federal officials said Michael Egger, Joseph Murray and Samuel Hamilton provided names, Social Security numbers and birth dates of inmates to Kristi Marie Ramsey of Gilbert, who filed most of the returns.

The filings generated about $37,000 in refunds from 2009 to 2012.  Hamilton is in the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence on drug and assault charges.

Arizona Department of Corrections records indicate Egger was released from prison in 2011 after serving time for forgery and theft.  Murray was released from prison in 2012 after serving a sentence for drug charges.
