Federal Court to Debate Brewer’s Decision To Deny Driver’s Licenses To Immigrants

Jan-Brewer-MadA request to block Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's order denying driver's licenses for immigrants who have gotten work permits and avoided deportation under a new Obama administration policy is being debated in federal court.

U.S. District Judge David Campbell is scheduled to hear arguments today in a lawsuit by immigrant rights advocates that say Brewer's policy is unconstitutional because it is trumped by federal law.  The lawsuit alleges the policy makes it difficult or impossible for such young immigrants to go to school, grocery stores and keep a job.

Brewer's lawyers counter that President Barack Obama's policy does not have the same trumping effect of federal law.  They say the young immigrants named in the lawsuit did not support their allegation that they cannot attend to their daily needs without a license.
