The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has designated this week as "Pool Safely Week" – a reminder that there are still a lot of hot summer days left where safe swimming should be a priority. Campaign leader Kathleen Reilly says the focus is making sure kids are supervised and know how to swim – especially the little ones.
There have already been nine child drownings this year in the state, according to the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona. Just over 100 near-drownings have been reported statewide since January. August has also been designated as Pool Safety Month in the city of Yuma.
